"Smucker's Stars on Ice," as always, amazed and delighted fans of
figure skating on Saturday, when the touring show -- celebrating its
25th anniversary -- enjoyed its first stop at Consol Energy
Center.
The cast of champions from the Olympics and other competitions --
including gold medalist Evan Lysacek, silver medalist Sasha Cohen and
bronze medalist Joannie Rochette -- each performed solo numbers and
funny group acts. Old-timer Kurt Browning -- the 40-something,
four-time World Champion from Canada -- served as the show's comedian,
with goofy antics and an act where his voice, in a recorded
soundtrack, cracked jokes while he skated.
The show is like watching ballet on ice, and it boggles the minds of
people whose skating experience is mostly limited to clutching the
rink's wall.
Sadly, the Consol center was less than half-full. Yet, the
enthusiastic audience made up for the gaps in the crowd with their
loud support.
