A family that skates together, stays together.
Penn State's Pegula Ice Arena hosted many talented
Olympic-medal-winning figure skaters and their families last night as
part of the Musselman's Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute.
The show was hosted by 1992 Olympic gold medalist, Kristi Yamaguchi,
and three-time U.S. Champion, Michael Weiss.
The entire show was filmed and will be aired on NBC Sunday November
24th, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Famous country singer Sara Evans lent her voice to many of the figure
skaters' performances while others grazed the ice to songs like
"Daughters" by John Mayer and "What I Like About You" by The
Romantics.
The skating families' children sat by the stage Evans was singing at
while their parents wowed the crowd with spins, leaps, and other
acrobatic tricks.
Some families and children had never seen figure skating before but
many young fans were enthusiastic to be there.
Brian Bressler from Aaronsburg brought his young son Trevor who said
it was his first time seeing figure skating and he loved it.
The event not only created a family friendly environment for the
audience, but also turned the ice into a glowing piece of art by means
of colorful, kaleidoscope-like lighting.
Skaters would often take the ice along with their spouse or children
during the night to make for a graceful and talented spectacle as the
crowd cheered on the performers.
But, it wouldn't be considered a Penn State function if the Nittany
Lion itself didn't take the ice.
The mascot along with the Penn State Figure Skating Club closed out
the first half of the show before intermission with an engaging
rendition.
Mary Seitz from Johnstown said she watched figure skating on
television often and thought it was cool to see so many Olympians at
Penn State.
Seitz's daughter Laura (freshman - biology) said she is a huge country
music fan and enjoyed Sara Evans.
Other attendees thought Pegula was the best place for an event like
this.
Matt Heckman from State College said he hopes that there will be more
family oriented events at Pegula and said his eight-year-old daughter
Madeleine will soon be taking skating lessons there.
"I hope they max the potential of this place," Heckman said.
