Dynamic Browning emerges the victor

KURT Browning, of Canada, retained his world title here last night
with another dynamic display in the free programme. Viktor Petrenko
had to be satisifed with the silver medal again for the Soviet Union.
It was a night for the gymnasts, with two quadruple toe loops in a
competition for the first time and any number of triple axels, one, if
you please, in combination with a triple toe loop. That highlight was
achieved by Todd Eldredge, the American champion, which carried him
into third place.
Petrenko slipped in a double toe loop rather than a triple in
combination with a triple axel; he almost fell off a triple loop and
two-footed a butterfly.
Browning could not quite hold the edge of a triple toe loop on the
end of a triple axel, but he landed seven triples, including a
stunning combination of triple salchow to triple loop.
Steven Cousins was sixteenth in the free, finishing two places
higher than he had begun the evening and two places higher than last
year.
A victory for the French couple, Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay, in
the original dance to a blues rhythm had earlier set up a grandstand
finish to their competition tonight. They lie narrowly second to Maia
Usova and Alexander Zhulin, of the Soviet Union, with the holders,
Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko, also from the Soviet Union,
equally within striking distance in third place.
