PRAGUE--Fifty years after Casablanca was made, Kurt Browning's
figure skating adaptation of scenes and music from the movie produced an
appropriately-colored gold medal at the world championships Thursday night.
Browning's on-ice portrayal of Humphrey Bogart is a uniquely
innovative 4 1/2-minute free-skating routine and was pieced together under
the direction of Sandra Bezic.
Bezic skated competitively and in ice shows before moving into
choreography. Her first big success was in 1984 when programs she designed
for Barb Underhill and Paul Martini helped them win the world pairs title.
Skaters from all over the world began picking her brain. Her work
gave Americans Brian Boitano and Kristi Yamaguchi the extra edge to win
Olympic gold in 1988 and 1992, respectively.
Browning went to Bezic last spring for advice about his skating
future while making the decision to move from Edmonton to Toronto. It
turned out to be a key move in Browning's comeback season.
